Potosi is one of the highest cities in the world at 4,090 meters, and sits at the foot of the Cerro de Potosí or Cerro Rico (rich mountain), named like this because of its huge amounts of silver that made the region the major supplier of silver for the Spanish Colonial Empire, and a very wealthy city with exquisite colonial churches and monasteries, administration buildings, schools and universities. For centuries, it was the location of the Spanish colonial mint (Casa de la Moneda), today a world-renowned museum. Silver is still extracted today.
